IOWA . . . . . *PRIVATE SOURCES DTN COMMENTS: A light trade in parts of the South with live business marked at $138, $2 lower than last week's weighted averages. A light dressed trade is being reported in Nebraska at $226 to $227, $2 to $3 lower than last week's weighted average basis Nebraska. The majority of this dressed business is set for delivery the week of June 6th. Some asking prices are around $142 in the South, and $232 the North. The Fed Cattle Exchange Auction today listed a total of 1,805 head (TX 1,515 head, CO 105 head, CA 34 head, KS 151 head), of which 34 head from CA actually sold at $135.25. 1,771 head were listed as unsold, as they did not meet the reserve prices, that ranged from $133 to $142. Opening prices ranged from $131 to $138, high bids ranged from $135.25 to $138.50. Today's slaughter totaled 125,000 head, even with last week, but 5,000 more than a year ago. Cattle futures closed mostly moderately lower on live contracts, off 65 to up 27, and mostly moderately to sharply lower on feeder issues, off 22 to 105. Beef cutouts are expected to close higher with moderate to good box movement.
